Guide to Fall Style – Baltimore Casual Chic

By: Carrie Mitchum - Baltimore Image Consultant for My Image Expert

Now that Fall is officially here toss the sunscreen and discover the new trends for the season. The downside of the economy has led to the upside for a new fashion trend; Fashion Depression Chic. For fall 2009 designers cast off last seasons blinding brights and embraced black as it plastered the runways and editorials. To try these monochromatic combinations at home simply add a subtle hint of color by mixing in light tonal grays, rich blues, dark greens or white.  Pick timeless pieces with strong lines and exaggerated embellishments. Classic pieces such as: a basic black sheath dress, a classic white button up or a tweed pencil skirt.  These are staple and classic items for every season but this season edgy accents and layering will spice up your otherwise boring basics.

For fall ’09 a masculine blazer is a signature item so don’t hesitate to splurge. This go to piece can be paired with jeans, trousers, dresses or skirts. The trick is to let curves peek out from under the blazer giving just a tease of a feminine silhouette. So opt for a dress with a cinched waist or a v-neck tee to accent a feminine neckline. Add a personal touch with a dip-dyed scarf, layered necklaces or fedora hat.

For the office the shrunken tailored blazer is the perfect look; add a pop of color with a floral or abstract printed blouse. When selecting accessories, remember this season, the skinny belt is in so put the thick belts in the back of the closet. Add a belt at the waist line of the blouse to show of a cinched waist under your tailored blazer. As for shoes, round toe platform pumps are a redesigned retro item with a modern twist.  The best selection is found at Ma Petite Shoe located in Hampden. Another look for the shrunken blazer is to pair with leggings, opt for full-length leggings in rich tones but black is always the best choice. Pair with a long loose sweater or layered tees.  Make sure to pick pieces that hit mid hip and add a high-heeled ankle boot that will complete this look.

If there is one thing to stock up on this season living in a causal city like Baltimore; denim is at the top of the list for fall. This season has many variations on denim: motocross, torn, high waisted, skinny, cigarette and denim leggings. When it comes to chosen denim pick the style that works best with your body type. Torn jeans work for all body types and are available in dark rinse, faded wash, gray, black and they are a trendy pick for fall ‘09. Gray torn jeans with beaded embellishments was seen at D&G’s runway fashion show and ABS has an amazing pair of motocross jeans that every girl must have. The torn style is better suited for a younger, trendier individual.  For the tall lean waif girls like Kate Moss, feel free to rock denim leggings paired with a great ankle boot and motorcycle jacket for the perfect look.

For Baltimore’s fashion forward crowd, items like Jason Wu’s silver metallic sheath dress with black and opaque beaded shoulders is a must have. Bold shoulders are at the top of the list, tailored blazer with shoulder pads, over exaggerated shoulders on silk blouses and patch work are just a few of the embellishments to look for when shopping. The one shoulder dress or top is another way to show a little skin without going completely overboard.  Remember, there’s a thick line between classy and assy!

Men’s fashion will follow the same depression chic guidelines with rough edges, monotone colors and outdoor influences.  Rough details for fall ‘09 are added to belts, shoes, jackets and more; look for studded details from lines such as William Rast.  Rock and roll never dies.  This look has become a classic menswear style but you don’t want to overdo it. Add a personal touch by mixing a blazer with t-shirt and a pinstriped vest! A vintage tee, v-neck sweater vest, studded belt and torn jeans is a look all Baltimoreans can follow.

Monotone colors will be seen and wore by all; this trend couldn’t be easier. Pick a color and create a look; dark brown trouser paired with a tailored mocha oxford, chocolate herringbone sweater and hazel brown scarf. Remember to pick quality pieces especially when picking out classic staple items such as an oxford or overcoat. These are pieces that can last a life time so don’t hesitate to splurge.

Outdoors influences from designers like Ralph Lauren, wool sweaters, plaids and earth tones are perfect for weekend wear. Torn denim and moccasins complement this look. Layering is another element of the outdoors influence and every man must have at least one plaid button up this fall. Opt for a vintage pair of leather motorcycle boots to complement the plaid oxford to create an edgy outdoors look. Baltimore does not provide many selections when it comes to men’s fashion.  The choices are limited which makes clothing selection a painful process.  A session with our Baltimore image consultant will show you hot find stores suitable for your body structure, personality, lifestyle, career and social activities.  Our Baltimore image consultant will show how to combine outfits to create your individual style.  Whether its casual, artistic, or business professional, our Baltimore image consultant will show you how to navigate the local shops in order to find the right clothing solutions.
